I think its all about view perspective... like what I am seeing in which angle. For example: a bird flying on the sky and seeing a guy walking on the street from a 10K (kilometer up) view. at 10K view that bird will see only the head of that guy (for example the 3rd nissan logo from the above). if that bird come down a bit like 5K then it will see some other part of that guy like hand leg etc (for example the 2nd MTV logo). If that bird comes on the street he will see almost the whole body of that guy (like the last logo of the Nissan).

What I am trying to say is it depends on presentation of your view.

The bird can't see the whole body of the man. it can see only one part of that guy. either front or back or sany sides, may be with the depth. Then it will see the man as a 3d. Thats my idea.

If DEPTH exists then it's 3D

According to Zahid bhai's idea in 1st Nissan logo, If I want to consider the white border then its 3D but If I not then 2D. Still confusing what is it..2d or 3d? But the below 3D logo gives the proper idea of that logo. Like no its not overlapped, it rather intersects. it could overlapped...and also can be showed as 3D... So exact detail comes in 3D view. Therefore last logo was also 3D logo :)

Actually nothing is 3D :p

We are just trying to create the illusion of 3D in the 2D display media like monitor or paper
Some illusions are more realistic than the others and we are mentioning those as 3D

Anything has the sense of Depth (Low or High) can be mention as 3D

So whats the debate - the degree of realistic illusion or the quality ??

why u r fight for 2d or 3d
alright, i m gonna give u a little solution.

1d is the shallowest of all
Single lines drawn stand tall
2d at least now with this
A square can be formed oh bliss
3d now this we get a cube
Woooo we creating now dude
4d i guess we adding sound
and textures that us surround
5d well if it were to exsist
our thoughts feelings are added to the list
from http://www.poemhunter.com/poem/1d-2d-3d-4d-5d/

there is a lot of theory about 1-10dimension
somebody thinks 6d is about time
8d is like, you can see everything and u can control it it if u want. (Like God)
bt still i m not sure

anyway
about 2d and 3d, i wana say
eveything is 2d whatever we see in our monitor or any photographs etc. its not about depth or anything else.
and if we can control it with x,y and z axis than it goes to 3d.

example:
when we work with maya or 3ds max or any other 3d software, we see it as 2d bt there is facility to control it with x,y and z axis. so they call it 3d.

thank u.

@Saad - Actually its 11dimension(including time) that describes the universe/god as believed by some physical scientists. Try "M theory"/String Theory to find out more about that if interested.

Software like 3ds/Maya only gives you the tools for creation time. The output is still a snap or sequence of snaps of a particular view. Just because you can rotate a ball in real life not necessarily makes it a 3d when we take a photo of it. It still can be represented as a flat object with proper conditioning. Like in silhouettes photography. Consider the following image
Image
If you ignore other parts and consider the dirk house only, its 2d regardless of it being a 3d object in a software.

What i'm trying to say is, Software like 3ds gives you the scope to work in a 3d environment for ease. Plus a greater level of realism. But you can produce same output without the software, by hand say like in realistic oil paintings. The main focus/difference of 2d and 3d is the perceptions.

Hope these make sense.

in my view the 3D is nothing more than a modern term. even if you look at the old art paintings, architectural drawing or any other form of visual art, they all have the aspect of 3D (or we can say depth or perspective to be more specific) this doesn't mean that 3D is nothing. it is more of a modern invention to give the actual word to perspective thing, and the term 3D is now evolved too much to include the realistic shadows, time, sound etc. etc. that's why asif bhai said that Meena cartoon is 2D and Shrek is 3D, it is just because the Shrek has more detailed life like shadows and is made with the modern technology of motion sensors which is another great invention of recording human movements from all dimensions but it doesn't mean that Meena doesn't have the shadows or perspective thing but again, if we think about the modern meaning of 3D then Yes, Meena is 2D.

I hope I make sense!

Good to know about your thought about 2D and 3D. According to your thoughts, doesn't it mean that after 5 or 10 years we are going to call "Shrek" as a 2D cartoon? After 5years Im sure you guys will have better tools than 3D Max or Maya. So there will be a possibility to call Shrek as a 2D cartoon and Meena was just a cartoon :)

Shabbir bhai, we don't have to wait 5 or 10 years. Its already here for sometime now. The term 3d in movies now means the real 3d feeling through a special chosma. I guess respecting to these new tech, Shrek is 2d or at least too flat and Meena is just a GREAT cartoon.

I agree ... after 5 years maybe we call Shrek is a classic 3D cartoon ... BOOM ... BOOM ...

it doesn't mean that we will be calling Shrek a 2D cartoon, it will remain 3D but Yes, its possible that may be in a few years a new term or technology would be invented to get more than the graphics of Shrek.

Tariq bhai is also right, may be will call the movies like Shrek a classic 3D

Well the fact is we don't have any solid and logical explanation of 2D and 3D (correct me if I am wrong) at this moment. Or we can arrange a poll for this :-)
