shabbir wrote:Zaved bhai first of all congratulation to be the first person under DD Spotlight (Y) we feel proud to have you in DD community. You truly a brilliant artist and has sharp concept in sketch. To be very frank I am a great fan of your sketch though i dont have that much knowledge in sketch. I really dont know what should I ask you and I dont have that guts  However here are some basic question.

1. How a beginner can start doing sketching? I mean what type of process/steps should she/he follows?
2. should they start sketching with their imagination or should do what they are seeing?
3. From my small knowledge, I think blending and lighting is the toughest part. So what is the easiest way of learning this?

I hope your answer will help us (my type of student :-)) a lot

Take care.
Shabbir
Shabbir, thanks a bunch. And sorry for the late reply. But you guys are putting me in a pedestal which I really am not worthy of.
Anyway, amar academic kono knowledge nai, just korte korte shekha. I can only speak for myself. But as it worked for me, I'm sure it's going to work for everybody else.

1. The first thing is to, use references. shamne ja paben, akte thaken. Can be newspaper pciture, can be from story books. sketch pore, age line art. practice and practice. ekta kharap hole dome jabar kichu nai. keep trying. je lineart pare, tar jonno porer process gula khub easy. It's like playing a guitar. Holding up the first chord is difficult. Then changing one chord from another is the most difficult one. When you can perfect your lineart, that's equivalent to changing chords of a guitar - the most hard part is over. dekhe dekhe atke thaken - shamne ja paaben, tai.
2. Definitely dekhe. dekhte dekhte ekta jinish mukhosto hoye jaye. tokhon imagination theke aka jaye. But, start from references.
3. blending and lighting are the easy parts once you can perfect your lines. tarporeo, ei duita jinish shekhar ekta shohoj upaye ache, atleast amar personal ekta method ache. I call it, PIXEL method. ekta reference picture nen. ar ekta pen (Pilot DOT pen shob cheye bhalo). Then start drawing using only dots. Remember, only DOTS. For example, like the followings:

This helps a LOT. Lighting/shading/blending in all aspects.

Dear Zaved bhai

First congratulation to u be the first person under DD Spotlight. When i've seen ur work, always think that how it's possible to control pencil with the hand in
such a way. really we feel proud to find u in DD. I have zero knowledge abt drawing and sketch. Here is my question

1. How can we convert a drawing or sketch into digital format. We can make them scan, but if we need the same stroke and the pressure that the artist give his line, is there any way to convert them in a vector format?

2.If we want to use Drawing or sketch on broadcast graphics, What kind of tools and software we need to buy, obviously we need drawing expert but i ask about the tools and software?

Thanx

Hey, thanks Tushar. Now, the answers:

1. To be honest, I do not know. But, I believe that, what you are asking still involves manual labor from the artist. Most of the digital works are done in vector format first. For example, when I do mines, I do an initial sketch. Then I create the paths in Photoshop. If you are asking about a 2D graphic work to be digitized, then surely there are hardware and software available. But in a 3D realm, that's a whole new different story.
2. Could you please elaborate the question? Most probably, I do not have your answer. But I still want to know what you are looking for. I would like to request you for an example if possible.

There are several packages available that are used, from quite simple, to very advanced. Some are commercially available, others are proprietary in-house solutions.

For example, Studio Ghibli's production team of Howl's Moving Castle (http://disney.go.com/disneypictures/castle/ , http://www.xsibase.com/articles.php?deta... used Soft Image XSI (http://www.softimage.com/products/xsi/) to create the animation of several elements, like the moving castle. These days even in a 2d production a lot of 3d animation packages are used in the production pipeline.

Appleseed looks like it's a 2d cartoon movie, but uses cartoon. or cell shaders, to recreate a more or less hand drawn 2d character look. http://www.appleseedthemovie.com/
It is actually completely done in 3d software. South Park is animated using Maya (total overkill, if you ask me!). All the graphical elements are 2d, however, in this case.

2D Packages used, are:
- Toonboom studio : http://www.toonboom.com/
- Anime Studio : http://www.e-frontier.com/article/artic ... 3?sbss=793
- http://www.digicelinc.com/2Danimation_software.htm
- http://www.bauhaussoftware.com/2D_Animation.php
- http://www.plasticanimationpaper.dk/

It all depends, of course, on the HOW of animation. Take Anime Studio, for an instance; this allows for a bones-like structure to be build up from graphical elements. This makes it easier to animate, but isn't really hand drawn animation.

Digicel Flipbook and Plastic Animation Paper are a kind of digital flipbooks, albeit very advanced flipbooks. Don Bluth uses Flipbook, and loves it.

Besides these, mainstream software like audio editors, music sequencers and video editors are often utilized in the entire process. (Adobe Premiere Pro, Avid, CubaseSX, Logic, etcetera).

So, as you can see, the software in itself is not as important as your own input. Cut-style animation like South Park demands different software compared to completely hand-drawn animation. Some elements may be too hard or time-consuming to do traditionally, and a 3d animation app might prove useful in these situations.

Anyways, if you're starting out, and do not want to dish out any dough, why not try these:

Creatoon: for all-round animation, Creatoon is pretty much a full-fledged animation program & very powerful (view their samples!). Still quite easy to use::

http://www.creatoon.com

It's a free download now! So very friendly of the developers. They have a number of tutorials available.

For AfterEffects like animation & videoFX, Jahshaka may be the (free!) answer:

http://www.jahshaka.org/

Not as simple to learn to use, because it's quite professional in its scope, but nonetheless very powerful. Also built-in is a good video editor.

For a 3d animation solution:

http://www.blender.org.

VERY powerful 3d animation app, can be used to animate flat 2d graphical elements as well, off course. Another great thing about this app is a complete built-in video compositor.

There are, obviously, also many free video editing solutions available. (Windows Movie Maker, Imovie, Avid free, Zs4 video editor: http://www.zs4.net/ to name but a few) and sound solutions (Audacity: http://audacity.sourceforge.net/).
