If you have been designing for sometime now and had your work printed from the printing press then you must have come across the problem where the colors on the print turned out totally different from what you have used in the design.
For those of you who dont knw, printing press in Bd uses CMYK model to print...where as in places like American and Europe there are more advanced models like CMYKOG (Cyna, Magenta, Yellow, Black, Orange & Green), Pantones CcMmYyKk, etc. The problem with CMYK model is that it has far less amount of colors available than RGB model. Like some bright yellow, orange or neon blue, etc.
Anyways, there is a way to to see how colors will look like once they are going to be printed out. Do the following:
In Photoshop
Select View from the menu tool bar, then check "Proof Colors" and "Gamut Warning"
In Illustrator
Select View from the menu tool bar, the check "Proof Colors." Gamut Warning is set by default in Illustrator so you dont have to worry about that.
When you select a color from the color picker window, it appears on the smaller rectangular box marked 1 in the image below. If that color is not supported by CMYK model, then a small triangular icon appears beside it marked by bullet point 2 in the image. The small box below this icon shows what the color will actually look like when printed out.
As you can see from the image above the color selected and the color appearing in the gamut warning box is totally different and appearing to be a lot darker. This way we can predict much better what colors we can use in the design and avoid unwanted color shifts.
